Discussion:
[Latex2rtf-users] Word won't open equations in editor

Hi list,

I have a feeling this has been asked before, so sorry....

Converted rtf files open in Word for Mac 2011 and correctly display equations and numbers. However, double-clicking an equation opens Equation Editor but with an empty window, and at the same time, the equation disappears from the Word window. Cutting the equation first and pasting into Equation Editor results in lost formatting, i.e., garbage.

Is this the meaning of the comment on the SourceForge page about conversion to Word getting progressively worse over the years?

LibreOffice is much worse in this regard.

Is there a work-around? Can I edit the raw rtf code to any good effect?

Thanks,

Jerry

the equation disappears from the Word window.
Don't double-click the equation created by latex2rtf.
Latex2rtf creates equations as EQ field functions, and although
Microsoft designed Word's Equation Editor for opening EQ fields,
Equation Editor is very buggy in this respect.
There has been an attempt to program a workaround
(by editing the rtf code, as you suggest below)
but not really successful.

If you want to edit an equation in the converted document (opened in
Word), select it, press Shift+F9, then the field code is displayed and
you can edit it.

Thanks for your comments.

FWIW have had some luck converting tex -> docx using pandoc--equations turn up in Word as well-displayed and editable (with the "new" built-in editor (not the stand-alone one), except that equation numbers are lost. (I believe that "equation numbers" in TeX means "equation labels".)
